MADE FOR SKATE

The add-on Ankle Guards struck a nerve among skaters and remained in the company’s line-up even when Vans intro- duced the Style #37 Hi-Top in 1977. In late 1978, Vans replaced the Style #37 with the even higher cut Style #38, which estab- lished high top shoes as a solid fixture in skateboarding. Soon thereafter, Vans Ankle Guards were discontinued. Despite these safety measures, The Man was ready to strike again, as park after park succumbed to the onslaught of insur- ance lawsuits.
